Types of Hands in No-Limit Texas Holdem Poker

Hand selection is one of the main factors of a winning strategy in no-limit Texas holdem. It will be a good advantage to know what the hand types are in the game and what beats what in no-limit Texas holdem. Hand values are often relative to the board.

There are hands that have "No Value" when compared with the board. An example is a suited 2 and 3 (clubs) and the board has K heart, 10 heart, 9 spade, 8 spade, and 6 heart. We cannot even beat a bluff with this hand. In no-limit Texas holdem we either fold this or wait to see the turn.

If we hold a suited A and 10 (diamond) and the board is a K heart, 10 heart, 9 spade, 8 spade, and a 3 heart then we have a "Middle Pair" which we can easily beat a bluff with. In no-limit Texas holdem a bluff is a main winning strategy frequently used and hands like this can be handy.

Another hand type is a "Top Pair." If we have a suited AK (clubs) and the board has K heart, 10 heart, 9 spade, 8 spade, and a 6 heart, K club and K heart are our top pair and we can use this in no-limit Texas holdem for our aggressive betting strategy and build a nice pot or knock off players in the pot.

An "Over Pair" in no-limit Texas holdem is like when we hold AA heart and club and the board has K heart, 10 heart, 9 spade, 8 spade, and 6 heart. "Strong hands" but which do not complete the nuts are good especially as starting hands in no-limit Texas holdem. An example is Q diamond, J spade and the board has K heart, 10 heart, 9 spade, 8 spade, and 6 heart.

"Nuts" or near nuts are also premium hands in no-limit Texas holdem. An example is when we hold a suited A4 (heart) and the board has K heart, 10 heart, 9 spade, 8 spade, and 6 heart.

Remember that each hand type has the potential to win a particular pot size. Basically, hands with less value often win small pots and hands with high value can win big pots because the hands they play against are lower and cannot call big bets.

Hence, we see that hand types in no-limit Texas holdem are important to study as they correspond to our winning chances and sizes.
